This course will introduce you to the fundamental areas of Game Design, you will develop skills in how to devise a game and how it plays.

  • Overview

    This course will introduce you to the fundamental areas of Game Design. You will develop skills in how to devise a game and how it plays. You will plan and define all the elements needed to create a game including character development, story flow, structure and rules of play. You will be introduced to a range of hardware platforms and develop an awareness of basic programming.  This course is designed to enable you to learn the skills required for being a creative designer and concept artist for games design with the main focus on developing your skills as a creative practitioner for games design rather than a games design programmer or tester.  

    As with most creative disciplines, you will work through the design process ; research, concept, initial design treatment, prototype/storyboard.

  • What will I study?

    The course is made up of 9 units in year one and a further 4 larger units in year two. Learners are given a range of projects that challenge them to explore different areas of games design practice including visual communication, character development, illustration, 3D modelling, design software, contextual studies, animation, computer game development and sound design for computer games.

    In addition to this you will develop employability skills to prepare you for future employment or study at a higher level.

    You will be encouraged to develop employability skills for you to be successful in the games design industry, such as problem solving, creativity, positive communication and innovative thinking.

    4 GCSEs at Grade C/4 including English Language or completion of a Level 2 course.

  • How will I be assessed?

    In this qualification you will engage with study through a range of creative assignments, all of which help build confidence, knowledge and skills in preparation for your final Project Proposal and Realisation at the end of year 2 in which you can specialise.

  • What can I do next?

    This qualification is mapped to the Level 3/4 UAL Pre-Degree Foundation Diploma at Blackburn College. Many learners wish to complete this diverse, higher level course before they progress onto University or employment.

    Learners can also progress to a related degree course at leading institutions in the UK. Some learners also progress directly to employment within the creative industries. Many students also choose to progress on to programmes at Blackburn University Centre which allow you to follow a range of specialisms. These include:

    • Animation and Game Arts
    • Photography and Moving Image 
    • Fashion and Textiles
    • Fine Art

    Computer Games Developer

    If you love computer games and enjoy using your imagination, this could be ideal for you. Computer games developers produce games for PCs and games consoles. They also produce games for the internet and mobile phones. The work could involve making new games or updating existing titles.

    Most computer games developers have a qualification. However employers may be more interested in your software skills and experience.

    To become a computer games developer, you will need to have creativity and imagination. You’ll also need to be able to work under pressure and to deadlines.
