Students who wish to undertake the Top-Up programme will be required to have successfully completed the Lancaster University Foundation Degree (Arts) in Social Care and Wellbeing at Blackburn College. Students must achieve a pass or above in the Foundation Degree.

This BA (Hons) Social Care and Wellbeing (Top Up) degree can be completed when you have successfully achieved your Foundation Degree in Social Care and Wellbeing and wish to leave with an Honours degree.

Overview

Caring for others is a growing area of employment, recent publications such as Independence, choice and wellbeing, think family and the personalisation agenda, indicate the focus of society on the social care sector and the expanding workforce. As Government policies change, so too do the issues surrounding social care. The course is intended to recognise the growth in demand for individuals equipped with knowledge and skills to support the transformation of the Wellbeing Social Care sector and to meet the need for professionals in a variety of disciplines who can support service users to maintain their independence and have as much choice and control over their lives as they want to have.

What will I study?

You will study 6 modules to ensure a planned sustained programme of independent and advanced academic learning, and on-going personal and practice development. These modules will examine theoretical perspectives and principles relating to professional practice within the social care sector.

All students take a total of 120 credits per level.

Level 6 Modules (all modules are mandatory) include: 

  • Research Project
  • Applied Research Report    
  • Ideology and Social Welfare
  • Leadership and Management in the Social Care Sector      
  • Dignity in Dying     
  • Mental Health and wellbeing in later life

Entry Requirements

UCAS points

You’ll need 80 UCAS points to join this programme. All applicants must show that they have a good level of spoken or written English, and if English is not your first language you’ll need to demonstrate the ability to study in English.

Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have relevant work / life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview. 

Care Leavers or Young Carers

We want students from all backgrounds to have the opportunity to go to University. If you have spent three months or more in local authority care OR are a young carer, you will be eligible for a contextual offer. This is a grade reduction of 1-A Level grade below our standard entry requirements. For example, a standard offer of CCC, would become CCD. MMM at Level 3 Extended Diploma would become MMP. To apply we advise that you tick the box on your UCAS application which identifies you have spent time in care and to help identify you as eligible for our contextual offer.

What can I do next?

Upon successful completion graduates are expected to progress into graduate level jobs. There are various progression and career opportunities for those graduates who obtain a degree related to social care and wellbeing.  This Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme has been developed to respond to the rapid changes made by Government policy in recent years, particularly to the Children and Young People’s workforce. 

his route into the profession will therefore appeal to practitioners from a wide range of working backgrounds and organisations which provide services for children and young people in the context of social care, health, and education. 

The range of roles is great – from Care Home Managers, Care Coordinator roles and junior management roles within the NHS and hospice care.

Postgraduate study is also encouraged and past students have progressed onto MA Social Work degrees in order to become qualified Social Workers.

Past graduates have secured careers as: NHS Policy Analysts, Youth Workers and have also secured several promotions to management level within Social Care settings.

Supplementary Information

You will be required to undertake work in your own time and also undertake private study. This will be in addition to your taught hours in class. You may also be required to undertake a work placement/work-based learning. This is in addition to the taught timetabled classes, please bear this in mind with your planning.
