This is a unique qualification in the legal sector providing an excellent introduction to law. It is a relatively new course which has been written in collaboration with professional bodies, lawyers, businesses, large law firms, universities and law teachers from higher and further education.

    This is a unique qualification in the legal sector providing an excellent introduction to law. It is a relatively new course which has been written in collaboration with professional bodies, lawyers, businesses, large law firms, universities and law teachers from higher and further education.

    Young people preparing for a career in the legal sector need the right blend of technical and academic skills. Alongside the legal content on criminal and civil law, this course will allow you to develop transferrable skills such as case research, teamwork and client communication as it consists of work - related learning with clear progression routes.

    The BTEC Applied Law Extended Certificate is equivalent to one ‘A level’ and may be studied alongside A levels or other BTEC qualifications. The course consists of four units –

    • Dispute Solving in Civil Law
    • Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System
    • Applying the Law

    These three units are mandatory and are studied by all students completing this qualification.

    The fourth unit will be an optional unit agreed upon by your tutor from the following choices:

    • Aspects of Family Law
    • Consumer Law
    • Contract Law
    • Aspects of Tort The purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for higher education, employment or an advanced - apprenticeship.
  • What will I study?

    Dispute Solving in Civil Law - civil law and court procedure, trials and appeals, the role of different lawyers and other professionals such as mediators. You will also study the law of negligence and compensation claims for death, personal injury or property damage.

    Investigating Aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System – the focus here is on crime, offences and punishments for example, assault, ABH, GBH and trials in the Magistrates and Crown Courts.

    Applying the Law - builds on the previous units but the focus is on homicide – murder, manslaughter, property offences including theft and fraud, criminal damage and the powers of the police including arrest, search and detention.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Two units are externally assessed, this means learners are given case studies to research and prepare for a supervised assessment and a written submission marked by BTEC. Two units are assessed internally through a series of tasks set and marked by your teacher.
