Music is constantly evolving, inspiring creativity and expression in a way that no other subject can.

Our contemporary A-Level Music qualification offers you the chance to study a wide range of musical genres; brings listening, performance and composition to life in new and engaging ways; and links to the world around us like never before.

Our qualification motivates and stretches students of all abilities, equipping you with the skills and experience to succeed and go on to further study.

Music technology is built into the course - you can perform and compose using this technology.

A-Level music appreciates all styles and genres, skills and instruments, catering for different learning styles and musical tastes.

What will I study?

A-Level Music is divided into three components.

  • Appraising music
  • Performance
  • Composition

Appraising music

You will learn appraise, develop and demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of musical elements, musical contexts and musical language.

You’ll study different genres of music including: Western classical tradition (1650-1910) and other areas of optional study including: Pop music, Music for media, Music for theatre, Jazz, Contemporary traditional music or Art music since 1910.

Performance

For this element of the course, you must be able to perform music using one or both of the following ways:

  • Instrumental/vocal: as a soloist, and/or as part of an ensemble
  • Production: via music technology.

You must perform for a minimum of ten minutes.

Composition

You will learn how to develop musical ideas, including extending and manipulating musical ideas, and compose music that is musically convincing through two compositions. One will be in response to an externally set brief and the other a free composition

Entry Requirements

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 5 or above. Please note you will need a minimum grade 6 in GCSE Music. A passion for music is essential.

How will I be assessed?

Your listening, analysis and contextual understanding will be assessed through a written exam paper with listing and written questions using excerpts of music.

You’ll also be assessed through a performance as an instrumentalist, vocalist or through a music production piece using technology.

Your composition skills will also be assessed.

What can I do next?

Previous Blackburn College Music students have gained places at top Music institutions, including RNCM, Birmingham Conservatoire, Leeds College of Music and BIMM, as well as Salford University and Bangor University.

Many Music students go onto Music related degrees such as Performance, Composition and even Acoustics.
