Gown hire

Students must wear the appropriate academic dress (gown, hat and hood) in order to graduate. You must hire or purchase these directly from our official robe makers, Ede and Ravenscroft.

You can order your gown online when registering your attendance.

When ordering, please be prepared with details of your head circumference, and your height, your course/award information (e.g. Lancaster Bachelors Degree) and your credit/debit card details.

If you cannot immediately afford to pay for your gown please do not delay registering. You can add your gown to your order later (but no later than the final registration date) but you cannot attend if you have not registered by the deadline. There are also limited gowns available to hire on the day available. However please note that they only bring a limited number and these are available on a first come first served basis and therefore cannot be guaranteed so please try to hire your gown in advance. Without a gown you will not be permitted to attend the ceremony.

All graduating students are requested to dress formally. Please note it is advisable to wear a button fronted top/shirt so that your gown can be fastened to it. Please remember that you will need to walk between the different areas on campus and to and from King George’s Hall. During the ceremony at King George’s Hall you will need to go up and down steps to the stage when collecting your award therefore suitable clothing and footwear are recommended.

Your graduation robes will be available for you to collect on the day of the ceremony from Sports Hall 1 in the Sports and Leisure Centre. [see map]

Robe collection times

  • 11am ceremony: 8am to 10am
  • 2.30pm ceremony: 11.30am to 1.30pm
  • 5.30pm ceremony: 2.30pm - 5pm

There will be a lot of students graduating on the day so you must stick to the allotted time for your ceremony.

Please ensure you have details of the order number issued to you by Ede and Ravenscroft in order to collect your gown.

Please ensure that you return your entire gown after your ceremony otherwise you may be charged extra.

Ede and Ravenscroft are the only gown hire company recommended by Blackburn University Centre and we not endorse any other gown hire providers. If you choose to hire your gown from another company this is entirely at your own risk and please be aware that they may not have the correct hood.

Ede and Ravenscroft also offer a variety photography packages as well as certificate and photography frames which you can order via the website at

If you prefer to purchase your photographs on the day, a sales team will be available to assist you. Priority for photo sessions will be given to people who have pre-booked.

The official graduation photographers, Ede and Ravenscroft Photography will be located in Sports Hall 1. When you have collected your gown you can then have your photograph taken.

  • 11am ceremony: 8am to 10am
  • 2.30pm ceremony: 11.30am to 1.30pm
