  • Overview

    The Level 1 Award in fashion and Textiles awarded by Skills & Education Group Awards, is for learners who want to develop their practical skills in fashion and textile design.

    It is largely a practical course which gives opportunity to develop and practise the creative skills required to progress in the fashion and textiles industry. The assignment covered focus on Design principles in fashion and textiles along sewing techniques for garment construction.

    This course allows adult learners to study on a part time basis, attending on Tuesdays from 10am to 3pm during the day so it can be accommodated alongside employment, childcare and other commitments. It might be of particular interest to those wanting a career change or those just wanting to experience something different and enhance their practical and creative skills.

  • What will I study?

    The course is made up of 2 units and focuses on developing the necessary skills and knowledge to design and construct fashion garments. Learners are given practical tuition on the use of sewing machines and other industrial equipment. 

    The projects on the course cover two units - Design principles in the Fashion and textiles industry and Garment Construction (craft).

    Learners will learn how to use all of these elements to understand design of fabrics, sewing techniques for garments and create a basic garment.

    You will be based in our new £18.3 million Beacon Centre. In order for you to flourish in the creative field we have invested in professional facilities such as spacious studios, industrial sewing machines, pattern cutting facilities, industrial overlocker, screen printing and weaving equipment, digital fabric and wallpaper printer, Apple Mac design suites and our very own in house photography studio and infinity curve as well as workshop spaces for print, 3D construction, pottery and plaster.

  • How will I be assessed?

    In this qualification learners engage with study through project work, building a portfolio of practical samples as well as producing a final garment. Development is progressive taking learners through a series of practical workshops and assignments where they will demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject as well as their practical skills.

    Fashion Design Assistant

    If you've got creative flair and would like to work in fashion, this job could be ideal for you.

    Fashion design assistants support designers by helping them create new materials, styles, colours and patterns for fashion brands and labels.

    In this job you would need to have an eye for pattern and colour. You would need to manage your time well and prioritise your work. You should also know what's coming in and going out of fashion.

    To get into this job you can work your way up through a company or take a higher education course before joining a fashion business. Getting work experience, paid or unpaid, is especially important for this job.
