What is the Year 11 Programme?

The Year 11 Programme at Blackburn College supports pupils who maybe experiencing difficulties that are preventing them from learning in a school setting. It is ideal for young people who would like to learn in a practical way and study subjects that are not available to them through the school curriculum.

The right course will be agreed between the Year 11 pupil, the school, tutors, parent/guardian/carer and any other relevant stakeholders. To ensure the young person can work towards the qualifications and  experience required to meet their aspirations. The year 11 Student will have a designated key mentor and the study programme will focus on the students needs and interest.

Referrals to the Year 11 Programme need to be made via school or the Local Authority.

Agency Support

The college has an inclusive approach with all activities being open to all  students. The Year 11 mentor will be able to support the young person to access these. In addition with our wide range of internal provisions the college works closely with external agencies to provide holistic support for all our young people. These agencies include:

Healthcare Professionals, Social Care Professionals, Parent in Partnership, Engage, Youth Offending Team, East Lancashire Child and, Adolescent Services (ELCAS) and many more...

The Year 11 Programme has a range of subject options* including:

  • Catering, Construction, Hairdressing, Early Years, Motor Vehicle, Public Services, Business and more...

*Please note that whilst we can include delivery of additional Maths and English sessions as part of a young person’s study programme, GCSE exam entry for these subjects (and any related costs) remains the responsibility of the school/parent/guardian/carer.

We will support participants to develop wider social and employability skills, such as:

  • Confidence Building, Interpersonal Skills, Behaviours & Attitudes, Preparing for Employment, Problem Solving, Succeeding at work, Work Placement, Volunteering

Lead Mentor Role

Mentoring is a key element of the Year 11 Programme. The Mentor is the key contact for the young person whilst they are on programme. The young person can contact their mentor at any time either in person or with a dedicated phone line. We will support the young person to:

  • Attend regularly and on time for each session.
  • Interact and participate effectively in lessons and the wider College experience.
  • Remain engaged and motivated.
  • Remain focused on their individual plan, goals and aspirations.
  • Support them with any concerns or issues they have.

On completion of the Year 11 Programme students will have the natural progression routes available to them. This will enable them to move onto the next level qualification of study at Blackburn College.

Continued Updates

We provide schools with performance updates using College systems, Tutor and Mentor feedback. This will cover:

  • Attendance - Register System
  • Performance in class - including formative a summative assessment where appropriate
  • Behaviour - Promonitor system, Mentor report
