  • Overview

This is a hands-on, technical course in a wide range of disciplines centred around Music and Audio Production. We use state-of-the-art equipment to give you the best possible skills and experience. We have industry standard hardware such as analogue and digital mixing desks, and a range of professional quality microphones from professional brands like Shure and AKG.

The course offers valuable experience which sets you on a career-focused trajectory through work experience and practical study. Students at Blackburn College run live music events, recording sessions, practical equipment demonstrations, and even network with local record labels and professionals within the industry.

From the principles of studio design to the precision of sound design and sampling, you will master the industry-standard digital audio workstations and audio effects used to shape the music and audio that surrounds us. You will also learn to navigate the business side of the modern music industry by exploring the release process for platforms including Spotify and Apple Music, and taking command of live event production.

You won’t just be studying the industry, you will be in it – attending and hosting your own external music events, visiting professional studios, and networking directly with guest experts who are actively shaping the local music industry.

If you want to build the skills to produce, the network to succeed, and the experience to get hired, this is where it happens.

  • What will I study?

In the first year, you dive into the vibrant world of the music industry, exploring a wide range of career pathways while gaining hands-on experience in our professional recording studio. You will learn the fundamentals of studio design, acoustics, industry-standard digital audio workstations, and microphone placements and techniques.

By the end of the year, you will showcase your growing expertise by planning, arranging, and actualising your own collaborative music project of your choosing.

In the second year, you will build on this foundation by learning how to launch yourself as a creative professional. You will develop an understanding of essential business skills – including royalties (PRS, PPL) and copyright – through producing your own sample library and studio recording, advancing your digital recording and production abilities. You will also explore how to release music and audio through major distributors, to place your work on globally recognised platforms like Spotify and Apple Music.

By the end of the course, you will plan for, manage and run your own music event, setting yourself up in the local music industry. This is a showcase of your learning and development from your course in a real-life context. It also connects you with a network of industry professionals that you will have established throughout your time on the course.

Throughout the course, you will benefit from dedicated enrichment hours, giving you the opportunity to refine your instrumental skills, prepare for upcoming projects, access performance and live event management opportunities with Sunbird Records, and get ready for university, apprenticeships and employment.
