Date posted: 23rd August 2024

Blackburn College, ranked third-best college in the UK, is celebrating GCSE success for its adult learners.

The College delivers GCSEs in English, Maths and Biology for learners aged 19+ and those studying on its English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) courses, alongside its core Further Education and University offer.

With GCSEs in Maths and English being essential for anyone looking to advance in further education, attend university, or pursue certain careers, the College offers GCSE courses in Maths, English, and Biology for adult learners, in addition to its FE and HE programmes.

Mekka Dakak, Head of Adult Education at Blackburn College, expressed her delight at the high grades achieved by many of the College’s adult learners.

These results are another testament to the hard work, commitment, and dedication of our adult students at Blackburn College throughout the year. “Our students have worked tirelessly alongside their teachers, who went above and beyond to provide the necessary support, always keeping in mind the students' goals and, for some, their dreams. It’s important to emphasise how challenging it can be for adults to return to education. These results demonstrate that, regardless of personal circumstances, age, or background, it’s never too late to start anew or obtain that qualification for a career change or long-awaited promotion.”

Blackburn College aims to provide all of its students with the skills that will benefit the local economy.

For some, taking their GCSEs are the first step in reshaping their careers.

Aysha Harrington, 35, is celebrating a 5 in GCSE Maths. She said “I've changed my life and I wanted to achieve something for my kids and myself. The College has been supportive. I've done a teaching assistant course, and I now want to do community work as well.”

Hayley Naylor, 57, achieved a 6 in her GCSE Biology. She said: "The support here at Blackburn College is exceptional. It's really supportive in helping those across so many different walks of life. Textbooks were free and readily available and I was never worried about asking questions especially as an older student. I can't wait to be back here next year to study GCSE Maths."
