  • Overview

    You can take a Skills for Life English, Maths or ICT qualification if you:

    • are over 16 years of age
    • have left compulsory full-time education and do not have an up-to-date English qualification at Level 2 (the equivalent of a GCSE)

    Skills for Life English courses will improve your reading, writing and speaking skills for use in everyday life. They can help you boost your CV or move on to further study such as our GCSE English programme.

    Skills for Life Maths courses will improve your numerical skills for use in everyday life. They can help you boost your CV or move on to further study such as our GCSE Maths programme.

  • What will I study?

    Fucntional Skills - English 

    The course covers different reading and spelling strategies, planning and writing instructions, letters and stories, as well as developing your listening and discussion skills. The course will help you improve your English and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

    Functional Skills - Maths

    The course covers different elements of introductory mathematics such as numerical calculations and problem solving. The course will help you improve your Maths and gain a nationally recognised qualification.

    Skills for Life - ICT

    This route will help you get to grips with introductory elements of computing - such as using common computer packages. The course will teach you useful skills and increase your digital literacy.

  • Entry Requirements

    You do not need any previous qualifications to join the classes. You'll need to attend an initial interview during which your level of English, Maths or ICT will be assessed. At this stage we'll be able to direct you towards the most appropriate level for you.

  • How will I be assessed?

    You'll be assessed throughout the course. At the end you will be able to complete a Functional Skills assessment to gain a nationally recognised qualification.

  • What can I do next?

    After completing these courses you may be able to progress onto:

    • the next level, to continue improving your English, Maths or ICT
    • other courses that require a specific level of English, Maths or ICT to join
