Entry Requirements

The Level 3 Diploma in Accounting (AAT Intermediate) is the normal entry route. Other students may apply with suitable previous qualifications and or experience.
If you have been declared bankrupt or have had an IVA at any time this may affect your eligibility for AAT membership, please contact the AAT for further clarification.
What's included in the course fee? College Registration, Tuition, Tutorials and Computer Based Assessments (first attempts). Please note that there is a charge for re-sit assessments of £50.00. Assessments can only be re-sat twice, after which students will not be permitted to re-sit, in order to re-sit the assessment, students must pay to re-take the module (details of module fees are available by contacting the College)
What's not included in the course fee? Workbooks, Pocket Notes and Computer Revision Kit as appropriate. We would recommend all students attending on AAT courses at Blackburn College purchase a full set of Workbooks as a minimum. The estimated cost for these learning resources are up to:
- Level 2: £100
- Level 3: £125
- Level 4: £150
- Level 2 Book Keeping: £40
The course fees above also exclude AAT Registrations Fees and the AAT Annual Student Membership Fee, which students organise directly with the AAT.
Continuing AAT students pay the Annual Student Membership fee only.
What will I study?

This is a practical course where you will develop skills and knowledge in the controlling of costs and improving the performance of operations. You will learn to monitor and analyse costs against trends and standards. Management information will be used to prepare and present management reports. Budgets will be prepared, developed, and presented to management. You will examine how computer spreadsheets can assist management in the development and presentation of information. Draft limited company accounts and group financial statements will be prepared, in accordance with International Accounting Standards. You will learn to prepare and explain annual cash flow statements for organisations. To develop your research, analysis and presentation skills you will produce a project report (4000 words) showing how improvements in accounting systems can be achieved.
How will the course be delivered?
The course will be held at the University Centre on the main campus in Blackburn.
How will I be assessed?
The Level 4 in accounting is assessed primarily by Computer Based Assessments and the results are available straight after the test. For certain modules including the ICAS project the AAT allow workplace evidence when appropriate. These modules are marked manually and you'll normally have the results within six weeks.
What can I do next?
Jobs relating to the Level 4 Diploma in Accounting may involve supervision of small teams or other staff. Such positions can be found in accounting practice, local government and business. Students completing AAT Level 4 are recognised as Accounting Technicians and can work at all levels - from Accounts Clerks to Financial Controllers - in all sectors of the economy. They may apply to the Association of Accounting Technicians to be recognised as members of the AAT, denoted by the letters MAAT.
