Blackburn College named provider of the year at the Lancashire Apprenticeship Awards

Date posted: 11th April 2024

Blackburn College has scooped the Training Provider/Programme of the Year Award at the Lancashire Apprenticeship Awards for its commitment to securing employment opportunities for its students.

In addition, the College also won Construction Apprentice of the Year for the third consecutive year.

The winner, Tom Riley, a Level 3 Domestic Plumbing and Heating apprentice - who is working with SJL Heating and Plumbing – was awarded Construction Apprentice of the Year for his resilience and perseverance despite a series of personal setbacks.

Tom took on his apprenticeship with the aspiration to rebuild his career with future-focused skills in mind.

Tom’s mentor, Stuart from SJL, says: “Tom has an inbuilt sense of wanting to do the right thing, often going above and beyond to ensure his customers receive the best service he can provide. In one instance, Tom delayed going on holiday with his family to ensure an elderly client had a warm home over a cold winter weekend.”

Three other Blackburn College apprentices also secured a ‘Finalist’ title.

Ridwan Mohammed, who is studying Level 3 in Electrical Installation with Blackburn College and EDS Electrical, received recognition for his dedication to work and being a top performer.

Mature student, Nial Buckley, a Level 3 Electrical apprentice with Empress Electrical, was also recognised for going above and beyond to support his peers and sharing his knowledge.

Tom Kaye, Level 3 Domestic Plumbing and Heating apprentice with Blackburn with Darwen Council, was recognised for his work ethic and his creative input on improving processes.

The College currently delivers 33 apprenticeship standards, from Level 2 through to degree level, to over 500 apprentices pursuing a wide range of careers.

Dr Fazal Dad, Principal and Chief Executive of Blackburn College, said: “I'm incredibly proud to hear that a number of our students have received recognition for their dedication to learning while undertaking an apprenticeship.

“Supporting our learners to successfully complete their apprenticeship and secure permanent employment is an integral way we work here at Blackburn College, so to receive this top award recognises the fantastic work of our staff at the College.”
