  • Overview

    If you want a career in the Electrical industry then this Apprenticeship is for you. The Advanced Apprenticeship covers the installation, maintenance and repair of electro-technical equipment, from installing electrical systems inside a new building to maintaining machinery on a production line. To undertake an Advanced Apprenticeship in Electrical you must be committed, have a keen interest in the industry and have the determination and motivation to succeed.

    If you are aged 16-24, and you don't think you have the necessary 'work-ready' skills, we also offer Traineeships. Our 8 week courses provide the essential work preparation training, English, maths and work experience needed to secure your place on an Apprenticeship.

  • What will I study?

    • Selection of units from the Electrotechnical Advanced Apprenticeship:

      • Understanding health & safety legislation practices and procedures
      • Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
      • Understanding the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment
      • Wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment
      • Termination and connection of conductors cables and cords in electrical systems
      • Inspection testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment
      • Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults
      • 2382 - IET Wiring Regulations
      • 2394 - Initial and Fundamental Inspection and Testing
  • Entry Requirements

    In order to undertake this Advanced Apprenticeship it is desirable for candidates to have a grade C or higher in GCSE English and Maths. You will have an initial assessment when you come in for an interview, and this will show the level of English and maths qualifications, known as functional skills, that you will study alongside your apprenticeship.

    Blackburn College will work with applicants to help find a suitable employer where possible. However we always advise anyone looking to undertake an apprenticeship to be actively seeking employment for themselves too.

  • How will I be assessed?

    You will be assessed via an End Point Assessment.

  • What can I do next?

    Once you have completed the Advanced Apprenticeship you will be equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications required for working within the Electrical industry opening a variety of employment opportunities. You will also have the skills and knowledge to register on an appropriate Certification Scheme, progress to relevant Level 4/5 qualifications e.g. Building Services Engineering Technology & Project Management or Foundation Degree in Engineering. You can progress your career with further training into job roles such as Technician, System Designer, Estimator, Project/Contracts Manager, Site/Workshop Supervisor/Manager, Chartered Engineer, Sales Engineer or Commercial Manager.

    Electrical Engineer

    Electrical engineers design, build and maintain electrical control systems, machinery and equipment.

    If you are good at maths, science and IT, and you want a career in engineering, this could be an ideal option for you.

    In this job you will need to be good at solving problems, structuring your workload and enjoy working as part of a team.

    To become an electrical engineer, you would normally need to complete a foundation degree, HNC, HND or degree in electrical or electronic engineering or related subject, for example building services engineering.
