Welcome to Maths and English – GCSEs and functional skills
For a lot of students studying Maths and English is a key part of their time at college. Hitting the right level in these subjects will be essential to progress in curriculum areas as well.
It's important we work together – Maths & English staff, students and parents – to support attendance, ongoing effort, and ultimately success.
We'll update these pages with the information you need throughout the course. This will include a focus on updates for parents, keeping everyone up to date, involved, and in a position to provide the best support.
New starters in September 2026
For anyone starting at the College in September who has not yet achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English and/or Maths, don't worry – you are not alone.
Many students join college each year needing to continue their English or Maths studies alongside their main course. We understand that this may not be the part they're most looking forward to, but we want to reassure both students and parents that you will be supported every step of the way.
Specialist expertise
Our English and Maths teams are highly experienced specialists who work with hundreds of students every year. Our aim is simple:
To give you the very best opportunity to achieve a Grade 4 pass and unlock future opportunities.
Whether your goal is university, an apprenticeship, employment, or progression onto a higher-level course, English and Maths qualifications remain incredibly important.
Initial Assessment week
All students will complete an initial assessment during lessons in the week beginning 7 September 2026.
It's important that this assessment is taken seriously.
The purpose is not to judge or label students. It helps us identify strengths, gaps in knowledge, and the support each student may need to succeed.
The sooner we identify areas for improvement, the sooner we can help.
We look forward to meeting you
Starting college is an exciting new chapter!
We are committed to helping every student make the most of it and achieve the qualifications they need for their future.
Thank you for choosing to study with us.

Guidance and support for parents
The best way to help your child succeed in their Maths and English is by us working together to support and encourage them.
We don’t need you to help them with their Maths and English work – we’ve got that covered! But encouraging them to always attend, make their best effort, and recognise how their vocational courses benefit from a good level of ability and understanding of Maths and English can really help them to do well.
If you can help us by supporting them in those ways, it can have a really positive effect on their attendance, motivation, and how well they do!
