Proud finalists for the AoC Beacon Award for Excellence in International Work!
A huge prestigious recognition that celebrates excellence, innovation and outstanding impact across the sector.
As a finalist, this highlights our unwavering commitment to providing transformational international experiences that enrich our students’ learning and broaden their global outlook. It is an honour to see this work celebrated at a national level.
Matt Robinson, Executive Director of Student Support and Experience, said: "Being recognised as a finalist is an incredible achievement, but what truly stands out is the spirit behind it. Our Early Years students and staff have shown remarkable dedication in Malawi, fundraising, building and creating a nursery that will benefit generations to come. What inspires me most is how the strength of our Blackburn College community, and the wider local community, has travelled with them. You can feel that energy and compassion in the work they’ve delivered. It is a powerful reminder of what happens when education, purpose and people come together."
At the heart of this achievement is the exceptional contribution of our Early Years students and staff, whose remarkable work in Malawi truly embodies the spirit of the Beacon Awards. Their dedication, from fundraising to building and creating a nursery for the local community demonstrates the power of education, partnership and compassion in action.
What makes this even more special is the way the spirit of our college community and local community. The generosity, teamwork and sense of purpose we see every day at Blackburn College has extended all the way to Malawi, creating a powerful connection across continents.
Their efforts have created meaningful and lasting impact for children and families in Malawi, showcasing what can be achieved when learning goes beyond the classroom and into the world.
Amanda Boyer, Head of School – Health and Social Care, Early Years and Access, said: "This recognition reflects the passion and determination of our students and staff, who have poured their hearts into making a meaningful difference in Malawi. The foundations they have built, both physically and through relationships, are already transforming lives. And this is only the beginning. We are incredibly excited to return later this year to continue developing the nursery and deepening our partnership with the community. I couldn’t be prouder of the team and the impact they are making, both for our students and for the children and families in Malawi."
And the journey doesn’t end here.
Later this year, our team will be returning to Malawi to continue this vital work and build on the incredible foundations already laid. We are immensely proud of the difference they have made and the difference they will continue to make.
Being recognised as a finalist at the House of Commons, surrounded by colleagues from across further education, is a moment of immense pride for everyone involved.
Proud of our community, purpose and how we are making a global difference.
