This programme gives you an understanding of the range of different trades, and is a great starting point if you are unsure of the area you wish to specialise in. Following this course you could progress onto courses leading to the following career areas.

Bricklayers build and repair walls, chimney stacks, tunnel linings and decorative stonework. They might also refurbish brickwork and masonry on restoration projects. If you enjoy doing practical things and you are interested in construction, this could be the perfect job for you.

Carpenters and joiners make and install wooden fixtures and fittings. They can work in many areas, for instance on construction sites, fitting out shops and bars, and building sets for film and TV. If you enjoy working with wood and want to put your practical skills to good use, this could be an ideal career for you. You'll need an eye for detail, good maths skills for working out measurements and the ability to follow technical plans.

Electrical installation roles work across domestic, commercial, and industrial environments. Electricians install, maintain, and repair electrical systems in homes, businesses, and industrial buildings. They may maintain machinery in factories and manufacturing plants, inspect, test, and repair electrical equipment to keep operations running safely, install solar panels, battery storage systems, EV charging points, and other green technologies. Some roles include infrastructure and utilities, with electrical systems for transport, power networks, railways, and utilities.

Plumbers fit, service and repair hot and cold water systems, and heating systems in homes and businesses. They also work with gas fires and cookers. If you want a varied job that makes good use of your practical skills and takes you out and about, this could be perfect for you.
